Harry Potter? I didn't even know who or what this boy was until one fine morning right before school when I saw an advertisement for a new movie come onto my TV screen.
I'm going to be completely honest here and say I was hooked from the moment I saw that blond haired goddess fly onto the screen on a broomstick. Yes, I'm talking about Draco Malfoy. When I arrived at school, one of my older friends had a picture of the exact same boy on her school folder and immediately I started asking questions. Who was this boy? I had to know. What was this movie he was going to be in all about?
I believe it was that very day, back in year eight at high school when I learnt all about Harry Potter. I loved reading, always had, but somehow I must have over looked these wondrous books time and time again. Now, it seemed, there was no way of avoiding them any longer. The very next day I had a borrowed copy of "Harry Potter: And the Philosophers Stone" shoved into my hands and my life changed forever.
Weeks were spent locked up in my room, desperately trying to read the four Potter books that were already released. I suddenly found myself in a world of magic, in a world of mystery and excitement. Riding my first broomstick, discovering my first chocolate frog card, meeting a fully recovered Voldamort, all with Harry by my side.
Then ... there were no more. Whilst waiting for the next books I watched the movies and was not disappointed. Sure, a lot is left out, every movie seems to miss the point more and more, but it's there. It's a visual I love to have and if viewed on their own, no comparison to their ink and paper twin, they are a fine piece of cinematic art.
The very first time I heard that horrible cough that Professor Umbridge is most famous for, I found myself cringing and mentally trying to stop myself from leaping out of the cinema's seat and tearing the screen down the middle whenever she showed her ugly face. The effect was pulled off perfectly.
Whilst bits and pieces may be harshly cut, I must force myself to look at what is there, not the parts that are missing. Once that is accomplished, I am left with a fine movie, one that I will be excited to share with my children one day. No matter how horrible the movies may become, I must remember, if it wasn't for them making the movies in the first place, I may have never discovered Harry and would probably have missed out on some of the best days of my life.
