No matter where you look, you will find plenty of modern day pharisees. To understand a modern day pharisee, one needs to take a peek at a New Testament pharisee.
During New Testament times, the pharisees were knowledgeable about the religious laws. With that knowledge they became critical of everyone else. They liked to flaunt their "spirituality" and wag their fingers at people they thought were falling short of the law.
What they didn't understand was the practical application of their knowledge. They craved human praise and that is what they received.
Modern day pharisees are much the same. They are knowledgeable in the things of their religion. They know how to act, talk, dress and worship. When there is someone who doesn't measure up, they are critical and point out the flaws. They forget that they are here to help the rest of the world, not to show off how good they are.
We all sin. We all make wrong choices. The pharisee doesn't acknowledge his/her sin but is quick to point out the fault of another. These same pharisees who claim to love God and are willing to do His will also avoid contact with the sinner in question.
Knowledge brings with it responsibility. That responsibility is not to be construed as a way to criticize and brag about one's perceived perfection. It is to be used to share wisdom with others and draw them to the God of love.
How unfortunate that the modern day pharisee hasn't changed from his/her predecessor of hundreds of years ago.
