Getting a tattoo should not be taken lightly. Not only is it a permanent piece of art painted on your body but it can be costly. Of course, that depends on the tattoo artist him or herself.
Many customers do not know that the artist has to rent the space he is using as well as the tools and supplies. Because of this, many tattooists will charge by the hour. This can range anywhere from $80 to $100 per hour. Some will charge a flat price, usually with a minimum charge of $40.
Don't believe that having a colorful tattoo costs more than a black and/or gray one. There's no price difference. However, the location of the tattoo can make a difference. An easier spot like the shoulders would most likely cost less than an area on the lower back (not such an easy canvas for the artist).
And, of course, there is the design to consider. Commonly used hearts, loved ones names and dates, anchors, dragons, and snakes. Commonly used or very basic pictures would most likely cost a lot less than a design that is large and elaborate. Original designs by either the artist or the customer could, also, get expensive.
All in all, ask around. Talk to other people who have gotten tattoos and ask about their experience. Sometimes, a pricey tattooist will provide quality work. Sometimes, they will not.
