TV show reviews: According to Jim

by KJM

In a time when we are inundated with lackluster television, including far too much reality television, ABC's According to Jim is a refreshing selection. It is a comical battle of the sexes. Jim, played by James Belushi (who also serves as executive producer), and his wife Cheryl (Courtney Thorne-Smith) live through the trials and tribulations of marriage and parenthood in this entertaining comedy that has a solid cast.

The show revolves around Jim, a macho construction business owner, and Cheryl's married antics. In most episodes, Jim makes some remark or assertion that Cheryl finds preposterous. Not willing to admit he may be wrong, Jim often goes to great lengths to prove his point. He is not above lying and manipulating situations to come out the winner, as inevitably each episode becomes a contest of sorts between him and Cheryl. The usual outcome is not good for Jim, whose antics usually end up coming back to bite him. It's not always Cheryl who comes out on top though. She is likely to outdo herself and have things come back to haunt her as well. It's always fun to see how their situation of the evening will turn out.

Complementing the two main characters are a host of supporting actors playing the supporting cast, which includes their 3 children, as well as Jim's always unsuccessful in love brother-in-law, Andy (Larry Joe Campbell), Cheryl's sister, Dana (Kimberly Williams-Paisley), and her husband, Ryan (Mitch Rouse). The chemistry of this mix lends to some hilarious scenes and story-lines with the characters playing off of each other.

This is a very funny show that is enjoyable to watch. It plays on gender stereotypes and has a lot of fun doing so. Go on, give it a try.
