Can newly acquired Kevin Garnett lead the Boston Celtics to an NBA title this year? Yes! Of course he can. The recent trade for Garnett is the best move to come out of Boston since the ill fated draft of Len Bias in the 1980's. Maybe Boston should thank former Celtic Kevin McHale for cutting the deal with GM Danny Ainge. Maybe, just maybe, both former Celtics wanted to see Boston restored to its glory days. Yes, I know, McHale is the GM for another team, but I can dream can't I?

While I have my doubts as to the abilities of Danny Ainge as the GM of the Boston Celtics, as a life long fan, I can firmly say that I am exciting about the recent trade for Kevin Garnett. A deal that is being put together as we speak, but which still requires the Boston Celtics to work on the terms of a contract extension with Garnett. Once the deal goes through, the Celtics who added All-Star Ray Allen this year will become a formidable opponent in the Eastern Conference. With a nucleolus of Garnett, Allen, and Pierce, and playing in what is currently a weak conference, the Celtics have a legitimate shot at making it to the finals of the NBA playoffs this season.

Kevin Garnett, the ten timed All-Star and perennial league MVP candidate, adds a front court presence that the Celtics have not enjoyed since the heydays of McHale, Parrish and Bird. With the possible exception of Tim Duncan, the league does not hold a better all around front court player than KG. The 7 foot Garnett has averaged over 10 rebounds and 20 points a game every year for the past seven years. What's more this nimble giant can pass as well, averaging over 4.5 assists per game over his career.

Though for all his talents and attributes, Kevin Garnett could not bring a title to Minnesota by himself. All that will be changing now with his trade to the Celtics, where he will be joining the another MVP candidate in Paul Pierce and veteran marksman Ray Allen. Pierce is coming of one of his best statistical season having averaged 25 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. The equally impressive Allen has similar numbers posting 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assist per contest. Both players are long range gunners with the capability of opening up the inside for Garnett.

This trifecta of superstar talent is joined by exciting third year players Ryan Gomes and Gerald Green to make this the most talented group to wear the legendary Celtic logo since the mid 1980's. With KG on board one can forget the dismal 24-58 season that landed Boston in 5th place in the Atlantic Division. With perhaps only Cleveland and the young Bulls as obstacles in the East, I have a clear vision of the Celtics tangling with one of the Western Conference heavies for the title. This is a title which has been two decades in the making.
