Tips for buying a dining table

Your goal is a dining table. But what's your strategy? As with any piece of furniture, there are a few major factors to keep in mind while you're shopping for a dining table: budget, style, quality and functionality. Functionality is typically the first of these factors that gets pushed aside, trumped by style. Next to go is quality, which is often sacrificed by the budget. Before you know it the exciting prospect of a dining table may become an expedition into the dangerous territory of "no guidelines". The end result may be one of those lessons in life that you would rather have avoided.

Before your search begins, set your budget and determine how concrete it really is. If you give yourself a "not to exceed" limit and stick to it, you will be happier with your purchase after the newness wears off. By keeping your budget limit foremost you can wisely guide your decision making, thus avoiding regrets about spending too much money.

Functionality should be next on your list. If you have a square dining room you won't want to be shopping for a rectangular table. Considering an expandable table to accommodate guests? Measure the space so you know exactly how much room is available. This will make it easier once you get to the store and try to imagine it in your dining space. Don't forget to include a reasonable perimeter for pulling chairs back.

If you have children, remember that the dining table is often the most popular place for projects of almost any kind. Whether its art, homework or even Hot Wheel tracks, the table has to fit the bill or stress can dominate those joyous memories of child rearing.

Style and quality go hand in hand. Most styles may be obtained in various degrees of quality. The price tag will be a good indicator of quality. Even with the steep mark-up on furniture this principle remains evident. The old adage, "you get what you pay for" might help if the choice comes down to two similar tables with very different price tags. Chances are, the materials used or the construction of the less expensive table make it a "cheaper" table, which may or may not be acceptable to you.

Keep your predetermined guidelines intact while shopping for your dining table and you will most likely be pleased with the result. One more tidbit of advice to tack on to your strategy; don't be hasty to make a decision. This rarely brings about a desired outcome. Take your time so that you will enjoy the satisfaction from a decision well contemplated.
