In general, women are placed under more pressure by society to be of a certain shape and size. Typically, it is desired by men to have women who are "smaller" than they are, either in height, stature, or both. Also, the media perpetuates images of women who are very very thin, which in turn makes the "average" woman believe she is overweight.
At any rate, men are also concerned about their size. But since their clothes typically do not reveal flesh in the same places that women's garments do, there is a more lax approach to male weight loss.
From a physiological perspective, female hormones may prevent women from losing fat and inches in certain places right away. Because their bodies were designed for childbirth, women are more prone to gaining weight in prime areas like the hips, mid-section, and thighs-whereas men tend to gain pounds in more centralized locations like the gut and upper body.
