Separation of Church and State: an ongoing battle that continues ruffle feathers all over the free world, but when is it OK to gray the lines a little bit and allow some crossover?
Religious groups in the public schools would be a good for students that are devoted to their religion and find it hard to cope in a public school. These religious groups would serve more as a support group than anything for these students. While I understand that peddling religious beliefs in a public school would be crossing the line, allowing different religious sects to convene and meet and serve as places where students can feel comfortable is a great idea.
Outside of the fact that this would create support groups, the problem of students with no friends would be eliminated. If there was no other social group in which a student fit, a religious group might be the perfect place for the student to grow and learn with other people in their religion.
But there are some things that we must be wary of. There is and will always be some religious persecution out there. No matter where you are, or what you believe in, there will be someone who does not believe in what you do. If these religious groups were to be allowed in the school, there would have to be some way to safeguard the rights of these groups to convene WITHOUT persecution from other students, teachers, or faculty.
Allowing these religious groups in public schools could serve as a sort of microcosm of the real world and teach students how to be tolerant and accepting.
