The health benefits of running

It hurts, yet we drag ourselves out in all weathers to do it. But why? Running is highly addictive, which explains why we are prepared to push our bodies to the limit three or so times a week. But what is the point of it all? Sure, it's great to know we are getting faster and fitter, but there are also some massive health benefits to running.
Physically, it is the best way of keeping your weight down. If you run from a young age and continue into old age, then you are unlikely to be carrying around a 'spare tire'. As well as looking good, it means you are putting less stress on your heart, joints and muscles, so it is improving your all round health. It keeps cholesterol levels and blood pressure down. Your muscles and bones become stronger.

Running is also an excellent activity for your mental health. As you get into better physical shape, your brain sends out positive messages to your body. You not only look good, you also feel good. The 'addiction' spurs you on to beat your previous best times. You feel a sense of always wanting to improve. It also helps reduce stress levels. After a hard day in the office or a blazing row with your partner, what better solution than to pound the streets alone with your thoughts? As you run, you mull over in your head how to put the world to right - and end up realizing life's not that bad after all! Some people argue that running tires you out physically, leaving you unable to stay awake. The opposite is true. After a good workout, the body and mind are more prepared to tackle every day tasks. You become more alert after a run.
Those of us who take up running seriously also tend to follow a healthier lifestyle. Because of the desire to constantly improve our running, we follow healthy diets, steering clear of fatty foods and alcohol.
Where I live in England, there is a scheme whereby doctors can prescribe exercise instead of medicines for certain conditions. So, for example, instead of popping pills, a slightly overweight patient could be sent along to a running club, with his membership paid for by the National Health Service. The NHS recognizes that the benefits of exercise such as running will improve patients' health and save the system money as hospital treatment and expensive pills are avoided.
