Poetry really has a place in the 21st century. In a world so fast-paced and turbulent, I think that we need poetry more than ever. It's a place to express our emotions, our insight, feelings, fears, what we like or dislike about our world and everything that goes on around us.
Poetry is a reflection of our souls. Much of it is born of the human condition. It is a way of learning about and beginning to know ourselves as higher beings. And in such a violent world as we have today, I think that our souls yearn for that knowledge along with our connection to each other and all higher beings.
Poetry makes us think, feel, empathize. There is nothing quite like a book of poetry to take us away from daily grind. Poetry can be read in minutes whereas you might not be able to fit in a chapter of a book, such as on a plane or a bus.
Some poems give us solace; something to contemplate, perhaps about our world. It often keeps us from feeling so alone in the world. We can easily identify with others through poetry. It's music for our spirits. A painting of colorful words. It pulls together in a few lines an entire picture of an event or our feelings and emotions. People often pour into their poetry things they would or could never tell another, face-to-face. Poetry helps us to dream and share our dreams. It can even be set to music.
Without poetry we have nowhere to hide; nowhere to release our pain. Without it, we are wandering, empty and unaware of our real selves. It connects us to that vital web of life. It's pure and real; something very rare in the world today that we can only find deep within ourselves and in the form of the poem.
