When I was fifteen and lived on the family farm, we had many chores that we were expected to do each week-end,I was left with not having much of a social life because of being so isolated. It was just accepted that I did not have the same life style as my other friends that lived in town, they had the freedom to go shopping, to the movies and do all the other things that teenagers liked to do. I spent my time helping out our family to keep our farm together, which entailed lots of chores. Our farm was situated right along the side of the highway, so people could just drive by and see us working in our gardens or feeding the animals. I was always petrified that one day one of my friends would drive by and see me doing embarrassing dirty chores. My parents insisted that we wear funny looking rubber boots no matter what, and our old holey work clothes.
One day my worst fear came to pass. I was in the chicken coop, cleaning up the old straw and feces out of the hen house. It was a hot and dirty job and I was almost done when I heard my name being called. I stepped outside of the little house and to my horror it was a girl that I knew from school and with her she had a couple of friends. Guys! I could have died on the spot. My parents had just pointed them in my general direction and sent them on their way. I am sure that they read every emotion on my face. I was utterly distraught, and flustered. I have never been so humiliated in my whole life. Not only did I look hilarious, with my huge rubber boots up to my knees, but my old work clothes that looked like they belonged on a scarecrow somewhere. I am sure that I resembled on of the Beverly hillbillies, but a little more grubbed out. I tried to keep my distance, knowing that I carried the very strong stench of "le chicken coop", but I could o tell by their faces that the smell was making its way on the slight breeze that was blowing their way. They had actually stopped to see if I wanted to go into town with them. Imagine that! I politely declined and told them that I did need to get back to work, but it was really nice of them to stop by. I would have done anything to end our conversation. Or even erase it completely. They said their goodbyes and left, and I was left to wonder what kind of rumors that would be circling around the school on Monday morning. I knew that I was in for some ridicule of a sort. I just needed to find a way to hold my head high. My parents thought it quite funny that I was caught in a compromising situation; they always said that it was better to have the truth up front so that it did not bite you on the butt in the end. I guess I had to learn that one the hard way.
