Novel excerpts: Uncertainty

Violet perused the tomatoes. She sighed remembering the wonderful tomatoes she grew last summer. To be forced to take these had her cringing.

"Not to your liking?" The deep, male voice made her jump. "Didn't mean to startle you."

Violet frowned. Did she know this person?

"I'll bet you grow your own. Poor substitute, huh?" the handsome man added. How did he know that? "You just look the type." he said.

"Excuse me?" Had she said it out loud?

"The type to take solace in a garden." he replied.

Not knowing quite how one should respond Violet turned back to the tomatoes, picked a few and proceeded to the spinach. This person, carrying a copy of the Wall Street Journal had neither cart nor basket. He seemed to be following her for no other reason than to talk to her, or should she say stalk?

"If you're particular about your produce, I should take you to this all-night fruit stand in the city." he continued casually.

She didn't much care for his thinking he could take her anywhere but curiosity got the better of her. "All-night fruit stand?" she asked skeptically.

"Yeah, pretty wild, huh?" he said picking a bunch of spinach and handed it to her. "I guess it's for people who get a craving for mangos in the middle of the night."

Violet recalled getting a craving for pineapple once. She had been pregnant with Sophie. She suspected that may have been the reason Sophie ended up living in Florida. She had gotten a taste for the tropics through prenatal pineapple. She smiled thinking of her. The stranger was staring at her smiling. She suddenly grew alarmed.

"What?" she asked anxiously. "Why do you smile like that?"

"I smile because you smile." he replied easily.

"Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude but is there a particular reason for your talking to me? I mean, I don't know you, do I?"

This had the effect of making him laugh. "My name is Victor Romanoff." He held out his hand which she took reluctantly. "And, no, you don't actually know me but our kids used to play little league together, though I don't think they liked each other very much."

Violet seriously doubted this. Even though their kids were old enough now to be on their own she still remembered almost every kid Kenny had played against and with. "Romanoff. Simon and Ronnie?" she asked and saw his smile increase.

"I'm impressed, you remember my boys."

"Don't be. I only remember that which is mostly useless. I'm getting Old Timer's Disease' something awful." Why in the world did she tell a total stranger something like that? "I
