Short stories: Having a bad day

Relationships and dating can be romantic, meeting someone new. But what if you're having a bad day?

Having a bad day? Yeah, that's what I'd call it when you're awakened by a god-awful crashing sound right over your bed at six o'clock in the morning. Scared the daylights out of me!

This is a two-story apartment building and my apartment was on the first floor. It sounded like the whole roof came crashing down up there! I was out of that bed and out the door in a hurry, heading for the steps, scaling them two at a time to the apartment over mine, pounding on the door.

The door opened and there she was, late-thirties, wavy red hair, pretty green eyes, wearing a short blue nightie. There I stood before this gorgeous gal in my late forties, bushy dark bed-head hair, roughening beard, in my boxers! . . . My worst ones too! Okay, I told myself. Don't panic.

Giving me the quick once over, she began to explain. "I was trying to move my dresser and the whole thing just tipped right over! I couldn't stop it!"

Her sparkling green eyes were huge with agitation and apprehension. I was a little agitated and apprehensive myself, but kept my cool. "I'll go throw on a robe and see if I can help you."

She was still standing in the doorway when I got back up the steps in my worn-out sneakers and robe with coffee, ketchup, mustard and every other food group stain on it. I got the quick once over from her again, before showing me in, leading me to the scene of the crime.

"Yeah," I said, "that's a big heavy dresser." That thing was huge! I don't know how they got it up the steps! I couldn't believe it when she asked me if I could pick it up. "I don't think Superman could pick that thing up and I don't know what made you think you could move it by yourself."

I couldn't believe what she did then. She began to cry. "I paid those men to help me move and by the time I realized they had left the dresser in the middle of the room, they were already gone!" I instinctively stepped forward to comfort her and she came right into my arms!

"Hey," I said, in the manliest voice I could muster. "I'll get a buddy over here and we'll get that thing upright for you." Feeling her body so close to mine made me realize just how long it had been since the "circus" had come to my town. And when I got a whiff of her perfume, I remembered I hadn't showered or shaved since the day before, so I gently pulled away.

Her pretty green eyes looked so warmly into mine, I almost leaned in. She stepped away with a soft laugh.
