Recreational running etiquette is an important element of the running community. For the benefit of all runners it is crucial for runners to have fun and respect other runners. Even competitive runners need to take note of this as all should be running for fun first and all other rewards second.
AT THE TRACK:
- Preferably warm-up and warm-down in the outer lanes, on the field or go for a run in the local streets or park
- Don't stand, sit or stretch on the track as you will provide an obstacle and a risk to yourself and others of injury
- If runners are going to pass you, preferably move out of their way but you can decide this for yourself
- Don't mock or ridicule others who are training
- If you are running in a group take turns with running at the front or inner lanes
- Don't bring your dog to run with you at the track as it will just get in the way of others
- Don't wear headphones while your train
ON RUNNING TRAILS OR ON STREETS:
- If you run with a dog make sure it is on leash
- When running in low light or at night be sure to wear bright, reflective clothing
- Beware of others using the running trail
- Know the road rules of you are running on the footpath or roads
- Avoid wearing headphones as this can prevent you from noticing an oncoming car or bike
- Cross roads at the correct places where possible
- If you are running in a group don't take up the whole trail
- Run on the side of the road where the oncoming cars are driving so you are aware of the cars
AT THE GYM
- Be aware that others might want to use the treadmill that you are using
- If all the treadmills are being used you can politely ask the users how much longer they intend to use them for
- Wear clean shoes while using the treadmill
- Wipe up the sweat you drip onto the treadmill
Above are some pieces or running etiquette, I hope that the message you take from these tips is to respect other runners and hopefully they will respect you back.
