I can only share what I believe I know about it from my own experiences:

If one believes mind reading is fake, he or she will not be able to do it. That does not mean he or she will not be able to read body language to get an idea about feelings, but reading another's mind will not be possible, or at least not understood.

Mind reading is not literally reading another's mind because you don't take your physical senses with you. I tend to give most credence to the colors I sense, especially the red colors. Red, it seems, denotes anger, bother, and confusion, depending on how brightly I sense it.

Though it does not tell me what the other person is confused, bothered, or angered about, it does tell me that we are not done, even if the other person says we are.

People who do not believe in it likely sense it, but discount it for what it is. If they were to 'sense another is bothered' despite being told otherwise, they might get a better understanding 'how brightly the red light is shining' by projecting their minds into the other person's mind. Again, it will not give you a 'literal reading' of what is bothering that person, at least it does not for me, but it does help me try to distinguish anger from confusion.

I have developed ways of handling 'sensations of purples' in others designed to turn the purple into a bright glowing red!
