Reflections on Fantasy writing

Good fantasy writing gives tremendous inspiration. Great fantasy can actually change your life. Many experienced this with the Celestine Prophecy. My favorite authors are Sherri Tepper and Octavia Butler, both of whom build worlds and create characters which open the mind to new possibilities for human interaction. From their creations, I've rethought basic assumptions. This ability to shift perception, to change the reader's world-view, lives in the best writers.

Science fiction and fantasy are quite different usually. Rather than focusing on technology, fantasy focuses on human values, interactions and new possibilities. It allows an exploration of the heretofore impossible - thus enlarging our potential as individuals and what we can do, singly or together. The relatively new genre of visionary fantasy, such as The Celestine Prophecy, feeds humanity's hunger for greater connection with something larger than the mundane world.

TV often bores me while books almost never do. Yes, Harry Potter is wonderful, in large part because the books have opened many minds to reading as well as new possibilities. Thankfully there are many wonderful books that do this just as well. Suzette Elgin's Native Tongue trilogy eloquently explores the power of language, and how oppression can be overcome. Julian May's Galactic Milieu Trilogy, plus the companion Intervention series and The Saga of Pliocene Exile, spans millenniums and offers an unparalleled and uplifting study of how humans handle power.

Good fantasy writing gives much more than entertainment. It also opens our minds and our hearts to something greater than we've ever been. May we all be inspired to be our best!
