Everybody has been there: the aching stomach, the bloated feelings, the tightening clothes. One has eaten too much and there is nothing to do but loosen up the belt and wait for the pain to stop. There are several ways to keep this from happening in the first place, however.
First, eat more. Now this may seem like an oxymoron. If one's body is compared to an automobile it is the equivalent of keeping one's gas tank topped off versus emptying it out completely before filling it up. Obviously, it takes less to fill it if one keeps it continually topped off. Eating several smaller meals (5-6) throughout the day will keep one from overeating at any one meal.
Sit down and relax. It should take one at least twenty minutes to consume a meal. It takes that long for one's brain to catch up with their stomach. This is why when one eats quickly they tend to consume more food. They are not allowing the brain enough time to tell them that they are full.
Next, one can add more ruffage to their diet. Fruits and vegetables add bulk and fiber to one's diet and fill one's stomach up faster.
Unfortunately, sometimes the human body cannot determine between hunger and thirst. So drink more water. Drinking water in between meals or with meals can fill one's stomach and help hold off hunger.
A final way to avoid overeating is to try eating off of smaller dishes. Some feel the need to clean their plates. If this is the case, smaller plates will do the trick. If one starts off with a smaller dish they will have to put less food on it, thereby eating less.
These are just a few helpful tips to keep one from that belt loosening pain everybody has experienced at one time or another. If one follows these tips they can hopefully keep these moments to a minimum.
