"All of Us" was one of the few shows that was saved when United Paramount Network (UPN) and Warner Brothers (WB) merged together and became the CW network. Interestingly enough, since most of UPN's shows mainly sitcoms catered mainly to the Black community. However, most of the shows seemed to get axed during the merger. Asides from All of Us, Girlfriends and Everybody Hates Chris were the only shows saved. Veronica Mars was saved but it got cancelled within the late 2006 year.
Despite it's financial hurting in the beginning, All of Us remained strong and became one of the very few UPN shows that had survived the merger. Like Girlfriends, the show All of Us breaks away from the common black stereotypes we see on music videos, movies, and videogames. At the same time, the concept of All of Us is very different from Girlfriends. While Girlfriends centers on the lives of three women (used to be four until Jill Marie Jones left the show), All of Us provides something new and interesting.
This sitcom comes from the creative minds of the A-List celebrity couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. In the beginning, the show was almost axed due to financial problems. But Will and Jada used their star power to convince the networks otherwise.
The story revolves around the lives of Robert James and his ex-wife Neesee James. Neesee's apartment is burned down and is forced to move back in with her ex-husband. At the same time, Robert's fiance Tia had left him. There's nothing ghetto or thuggish about it. Their son Bobby attends a private school and is taught to be more proper. From then, the comedy begins as Robert and Neesee have to deal with the fact that they're still divorced and having to still live under the same roof.
However the one thing keeping them from going at it is that they care for their son deeply. Despite their differences, the two are always there for Bobby whenever he needs them. They are helped out by Duane's best friend in high school and college Dirk Black who has a daughter of his own. In a sense, Dirk knows what it's like to be a parent though he can get pretty irresponsible.
It brings up the important topic on divorce and how it affects the children who are in the middle. In a sense, it shows that divorced couples don't have to be mean and vindictive like a lot of broken up couples in this country. Robert and Neesee still remain friends though they're somewhat still attracted to each other. They do spend a great deal of time together as a divorced couple. At times, Neesee ends up competing for Robert's attention whenever his sister played by Tisha Martin-Campbell visits.
The story progresses as Robert and Neesee become partners owning an upscale restaurant called Neesee's. I found the sitcom to be pretty funny and brings the black community in a more positive life in the world of sitcom entertainment. Unfortunately, a few months ago in May the CW Network officially cancelled the show. It's the fourth most watched show but it was beaten by Reba, Girlfriends, and Everybody Hates Chris.
All of Us seemed to be one of the last few decent shows that appealed to the Black community. The rest of the other shows would have to be caught on HBO. There a bunch of people that do not have HBO. Hopefully all seasons of All of Us will be released to DVD sometime in the future.
