How to fight off the every day blues

Combating the every day blues can be a real challenge. What can we do when we are not really depressed, but nevertheless have that vague, uneasy sensation of dread. When nothing is wrong, but at the same time, nothing is quite right. The down in the dumps, end of the world, horrible mood that stops us in our tracks.

We could just go back to bed and hide under the covers until it passes, but that wouldn't be too practical. Or we could put one foot in front of the other and muster whatever positive feelings we can, realizing and accepting that our gloom is a temporary condition.

We can put away our "to do" list. It will only depress us further when night falls and we haven't crossed off one completed item. Even mild, self treatable depression saps our energy and strength. It leaves our mind in a funk, unable to focus or concentrate.

Here are some hints for using all the senses to drive away the blues and put us back in the pink:

- SEE -

* Go to a movie you've heard rave reviews about. Go to a theater for a change of scenery, or rent a movie. Either way, by the time the show is over, you may have laughed or cried yourself into a better mood.

* Pick or purchase a bouquet of fresh flowers. Just looking at them will boost your spirits.

* Bring out the picture albums or home movies and indulge in a trip down memory lane. Bringing to mind the good times in the past will bring back feelings of optimism and hope.

- HEAR -

* Call a good friend or loved one. Talking on the phone or visiting a soul mate can give you a quick lift.

* Play your favorite music, and turn up the volume. You might get the urge to break into dance.

* Sit outside in the sunshine and listen to the laughter of children at play or birds chirping. Fresh air and the sweet sounds of children and nature will boost any spirit.

- SMELL -

* Take a deep whiff of a favorite scent by strategically placing lit candles around the house. Vanilla or lavender comfort, calm and give us a sense of well being.

* Boil some cinnamon and nutmeg in water on the stove. The air will be permeated with the smell of homemade goodies without the work or calories.

- TASTE -

* Brew a steaming mug of specialty tea or coffee and sit in front of the fireplace when the blues hit in the winter.

* In the summer, a favorite iced drink and meditation on the patio observing nature will do the trick.

* Have some healthy, low calorie, low fat snacks on hand for an instant pick up and energy boost.

* Drink lots of water; often dehydration is the culprit
