With all of the emphasis on weight loss, not to mention the myriads of diet fads and weight loss pills on the market, it can be overwhelming to try and decide which route you should go to shed those extra pounds. The truth is, there is only one tried and true method to losing weight, and that is to "Eat less, Move More". As simple as that sounds, many people avoid this because it seems too hard or not fast enough, myself included. I have tried many diets, including the South Beach Diet, and have had mixed results. The positives: The South Beach Diet teaches you the difference between "good carbs" and "Bad Carbs" instead of telling you that carbs as a whole are to be cut out. It also has a very well defined and laid out menu with recipes so you have a guide to low-carb cooking. The menu items were really good and flavorful for the most part, although some of them required pricey meats and other ingredients. The first two weeks of the diet are very strict, allowing no fruit and very little of anything else that tastes good, and this is to get you past the "sugar craving" phase that most of us experience when starting a diet. These two weeks were my least favorite phase because I was irritable, mean, fatigued, and felt hungry all of the time. Once you get past it, you can begin reintroducing carbs back into your diet and you begin to feel better. I lost 9 lbs. in the strict Phase 1, and steadily lost another 10 on Phase 2, but when I ended the diet, I gained it all back. Overall, this diet helps to teach you how to eat and change your lifestyle, but can be very hard to stick to, especially when you feel horrible while on it. Great diet for those that are disciplined enough, but most of us overweight people wouldn't be overweight if we had that kind of discipline, right?
