Put down those self-help books! Stop watching Dr. Phil. Here's the real-world guide to combating the every day blues:
*Stop envying others* The grass is always greener on the other side. Believe it or not, people envy you as well. It's human nature to want what you can't have, and to think that someone else's life is better than yours, but you're only looking at the good without considering the bad.
*Get enough light* Especially in the winter, when there's less light (called "seasonal affective disorder" or SAD) your brain doesn't produce enough neurotransmitters that are needed for "happy thoughts." One treatment is the use of artificial lights.
*Exercise* Exercise releases endorphins which affect your positive moods, hence runners often speak of "runner's high." You won't feel it right away, so don't get discouraged after 1-2 workouts. Soon enough, though, you'll have more energy and your overall moods will improve.
*Socialize* This applies to humans (go on dates, get out, talk to friends, host a gathering) or animals (adopt an animal). Studies have shown that contact with other living things improves moods and actually increases life span.
*Eat chocolate* Yes, chocolate releases endorphins which contributes to positive moods. Only a small amount is released, but still, every little bit helps.
*Make a checklist* This helps prioritize the things in your life that are likely causing sadness. But it also helps psychologically because when you cross something off the list, you feel like you've accomplished something. It also motivates you to finish other things on the list.
*Look in the mirror* Do this and tell yourself the positive things about yourself. Too often we focus on the negative and forget the positive.
