It seems that virtually overnight the world has become a non-smoking zone. With the unreliability of weather, finding a smoking spot has become the new quest for the desperate smoker. With the hours of commuting, many have discovered that their car is their ideal escape. Or is it?
While your car may provide the convenient sanctuary for a quick smoke, you will soon discover that it comes at too high a price. Obviously, the world isn't going to let you forget the health risks of smoking, but combine that with the relatively enclosed vehicle and your risk skyrockets. Even with open windows, the level of smoke inhalation is dangerously high. Of course, should you have passengers (especially children) then smoking in your car should not even be considered an option.
The confined space also means that the effects of smoking on your clothes and body will also be much more noticeable. From the smell in your hair, breath and clothes, to the discoloration it causes to your skin, it is a recipe for premature aging and social suicide. No amount of mouthwash and cologne will save you from this one.
Finally, there is the car itself. As we all know, cars are one of the few large investments we make that begin to lose value the moment we buy them. We all try to master the skill of knowing the right time to sell it before it loses all its remaining value. However, nothing kills the value of your car faster than the smell, discoloration and damage caused by an in-car smoker. Smoking is expensive enough without it robbing of you of the resale value of your car.
If you are going to smoke- a question you should ask yourself from time to time anyway- be sure to make the choice of where you smoke carefully. Smoking makes a lot of demands on you- health, financial and social to name a few- so don't let smoking in your car cost you even more. And if you find you can't resist perhaps it's time to butt out for good.
