How to buy furniture for small spaces

by Starri Knight

Created on: July 29, 2007

Small space decorating is only one-part furnishings, and two-parts imagination and inspiration. With the right approach and realistic goals, there is no reason why your apartment or room can't be your favorite cozy nook; versus a crowded and claustrophobic closet.

Your first step is to measure up your space and draw out a floor plan reflecting those measurements. Now, make a list of all the ways in which you need and want to use this space. Is it for dining? Storage? Entertainment? A home office? Plan the purpose clearly.

Get inspired
Small spaces are a known challenge in the design world, and a reality for many. Where space is at a premium, creativity must be turned up to maximum. There are many special publications, magazines and television design shows dedicated to small space issues and solutions. Tune in for a wealth of ideas. But exercise caution not all small spaces are created equally. Make sure that the solutions are a custom fit for your space and lifestyle.

Look up AND down
Remember your vertical planes. With limited floor space don't forget to use your walls as much as possible. IKEA, for example, produces a number of small furnishings which collapse and hang on walls when not in use (dining tables, chairs and occasional tables). A full wall bookcase is instant storage, as well as a way to display favorite things, and can even be placed behind a small sofa, costing only 10" or so of floor space.

Dual intent
Always look for pieces that serve more than one function. A coffee table with hidden storage, side tables which are storage or light cubes, a bookcase with a shelf that pulls out and serves as a tray table, a night stand with bookshelves, under-bed storage, and a footstool on wheels which converts easily into a serving table with the addition of a wooden top or tray.

The sky is the limit
If paint is an option, use it creatively to expand the space and to delineate areas as appropriate. One wall painted a darker color provides depth to a room, and a backdrop for displaying artwork. Always keep the ceiling a lighter color to enhance the feeling of "height" in the room.

Leave yourself breathing room
Don't over-accessorize and avoid clutter at all costs. Keep your space functional but clean, and the sense of spaciousness will remain.

Throughout this idea finding process, create a scrapbook of things you love that could work in your space. Cut out pictures and make notes as you go. When you're ready, go through this idea file and narrow it down to your favorites, things that work together as a total solution and that fit in your budget. Always gather detailed measurements for every piece. Draw them into your floor plan. Remember to take into account door swings, window openings, electrical outlets and HVAC ducts.

Now, armed with a plan, a shopping list and an inspired goal start decorating and loving your wonderful small space.
