Celebrities spiraling out of control are nothing new. The very talent and charisma that drives celebrities to rise to the top also makes them vulnerable. Some have mercurial personalities that can be channeled toward excellence, and some manage less successfully and self-destruct. In the past, some self-destructed publicly, but many substance abuse and legal problems were covered up by powerful studio management. In 2007, though, hordes of paparazzi eager to capture every move and hangers-on eager to cash in on their tenuous connections to fame make celebrities even more vulnerable to crashing and burning.

Add in the stigma of the phrase "child star" and Lindsay Lohan has yet another strike against her. When did "parents of" become a job description or a reason for celebrity? Warring parents who use their daughter's fame to defame each other in a public divorce cannot have their daughter's best interests at heart. How can parents who are on their child's payroll objectively offer guidance and standards? The boundaries are too blurred. Spears, Hilton, and Lohan all have parents who are only too willing to share the spotlight earned by their children.

As fascinating as it is to watch people live their downfall in such a public forum, it is also sad. Out-of-control Hollywood celebrities are running the risk that the last words in their biography will be "died too young." Too much money, no boundaries, and no limits can be as deadly as a fatal disease.
