The health benefits of losing weight cannot be stressed enough. However that is assuming that you have weight to lose. If you are already in the right weight range for you, or even a little under weight, losing weight can do more harm than good. However for the purposes of this article I shall assume that we are talking about losing extra weight. In other words shedding excess pounds if you are overweight.
Most doctors agree that regularly carrying extra weight around will shorten your lifespan. This is simply because you will be prone to more life threatening conditions such as Heart disease, Diabetes, Arthritis and joint problems, to name a few, when you are overweight. So the first benefit is increased lifespan.
When you are carrying around extra pounds it is like permanently carrying a few bags of shopping with you. It will put a strain on your joints and muscles. Many back problems are caused or aggravated simply through a person being overweight. The strain on your little legs from carrying all this bulk may cause circulation and vein problems. Varicose veins are often more troublesome if we are overweight.
Serious conditions such as diabetes and heart failure are also common among overweight people. Some of this is down to the type of food a person consumes, whereas some is down to the actual weight. Your poor old heart will obviously get more tired if it has to carry around extra baggage.
Sleep apnea can be a problem when someone becomes large. The disturbed sleep from this can cause serious damage to your heart.
So all of the above conditions are either caused or compounded by weight problems and so obviously many of these are eradicated, or controlled better, if excess weight is lost.
The main benefits of losing weight are:
A longer life.
Less heart problems.
You may never get diabetes, or if you have it already, you will control it better.
You will be more active.
Have more get up and go.
Less stomach, and digestion, problems such as gall stones.
For women less menstrual problems.
Also less pregnancy issues for females.
Your joints, muscles and bones should work much better.
Much fewer aches and pains.
Less back problems.
Less bowel problems.
Lower blood pressure.
Lower cholesterol.
Probably a more enjoyable sex life, but that really depends on you and how much overweight you are.
As you probably already know there are many health benefits to losing weight sensibly and none to remaining overweight. Add to this the fact that you will more than likely sleep better, have much more confidence, learn to like yourself and generally enjoy life more what have you got to lose, but the weight.
