Christian reflections: Honoring marriage

I bless you both today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness, through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

I bless you both today
Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,

Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

I bless you both today through the strength of Heaven
the rays of the sun, the radiance of the moon,
the splendor of fire, the speed of lightening,
the swiftness of the wind, the depth of the sea,
the stability of the earth, the firmness of rock.

I bless you both today through the power of God:
God's might to comfort you, God's wisdom to guide you,
God's eye to look before you, God's ear to hear you,
God's word to speak for you, God's hand to lead you,
God's way to lie before you, God's shield to protect you,
God's Heavenly Host to save you

May Christ bless you both today
Christ behind and before you, Christ behind and above you,
Christ with you and in you, Christ around and about you,
Christ on your right and on your left,
Christ when you lie together at night, Christ when you rise in the morning,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of you,
Christ in the mouth of everyone that speaks of you,
Christ in every eye that sees you, Christ in every ear that hears you.

I bless you both today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness, through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.
-from St. Patrick's Breastplate

Throughout history, poets and songwriters have taken up the subject of love as their most passionate of themes. In marraige, however, we do not celebrate the sentimental whims of hopeless romantics, but the deeper truth that the course of history, for better and for worse, has been guided with this powerful force called love.

Songs about love speak to our hearts- they mourn love lost or scorned; they vow everything to see it fulfilled; they celebrate in its power and passion. While we may not always get it right, love speaks to the heart of everything, the divine nature rekindling in the brokenness of our souls. It is no surprise than that love rings so true in the melodies of our songs.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux spoke of one such song. He said:

"But there is that other song, which, by its unique dignity and sweetness, excels all... others there
