Ideas: Starting the perfect garden

Hosta's are peaceful tranquil plant's, some of the larger ones possess an architectural quality. These charachteristics help to create an enchanting garden without stress. That Hostas need shade all of the time is not always true; many of the newer Hosta's are flexible in their needs.

We used to supply giant Hostas in containers to a major Film Company through thier properties department. I'm told that some of our Hosta's went to a Royal Palace in London, maybe Hampton Court. We were asked to supply Hostas for a television programme about hanging baskets, which I have tried and the result was quite good. I used 'Ginko Craig', 'Remember Me', and 'Blue Wedgewood'.

Particular sun-lovers are, 'Summer Fragrance', 'Sugar & Cream', 'So Sweet', 'Royal Standard' 'Gold Regal', and 'Daybreak'. But, even these can get scorched on a few of the hottest days. With an hour of dappled shade around mid-day, it obviates it.

In general, and as a rough guide, most Hostas with variegated leaves prefer more shade than those with plain leaves.

Just think about a garden, and imagine amongst all of the colorful summer flowers and shrubs in it. There in the middle of the bed is a grayish-blue multi leaved Hosta, all of the leaf stalks arch upwards, against the bright colors, it's grayness is special. The other plants sets the Hosta out, and the Hosta returns the favour.

There are some diseases that can effect Hostas, but with over 2000 to look after at one time, I never had any problems.

The Internet has many articles and pictures of Hostas, and there are hundreds to choose from, especially in the USA, which must be now, the spiritual home of Hostas.
