We are all governed by habits. Overeating is primarily a habit. It is now time to establish a new habit, but one must have a plan on how to change that habit. To change, you must do things consistently for at least 30 days. That is the amount of time it takes to establish new patterns or habits. To be successful, set up a plan like this one:
1. Cook smaller portions. If this is not possible, store leftovers in smaller cartons and freeze them. More for future meals, less cooking.
2. Use smaller plates. It is more difficult to pile food on a smaller plate.
3. Drink a full glass of water before beginning the meal. The water will fill your stomach, which, in turn, will tell your brain that you are not so hungry and the brain will signal to wind down the eating.
4. Chew each bite 30 times. It allows the time needed for the brain to signal the stomach that you have had enough and the food is mixed so well with saliva so the digestive processes will be easier when the food hits your stomach.
5. Plan your meals. This will help you when buying groceries, too.
6. Find other activities to turn into a hobby. It's more difficult to overeat when your fingers are pre-occupied with something else.
7. When dining out, order a child's plate or a Senior special. Those are usually smaller portions.
8. Practice this habit for at least 30 days and you will find you are beginning to change the way you approach food, which will lead to less eating.
9. There is another alternative. Have all your teeth pulled. While you are waiting for the gums to heal, you drink a nutritional smoothie for breakfast.
Establishing new, healthy habits in as little as thirty days is the best way to prevent overeating.
