Regarding "Gays" in the clergy the operative words are "Practicing Homosexuals".
If we look at the commandment God gave "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery" what exactly are the connotations of the term adultery.

Adultery, anthropologically is defined as a group of deviant active sexual behaviors exhibited by people in any given society. Here the operative word is active sexual behaviors.

Gays who abstain from acting out their sexual orientation are welcome in the Catholic Church. It is quite clear that Jesus commands us to "Love each other."

However, love is always tempered by justice. Do we let alcoholics who are dry now work in liquor stores or Bartend? This is a very practical issue. God tells us as does the church to not place ourselves in any situation that could lead to mortal sin.

This applies to the other facets of adultery: extramarital sex; fornication, masturbation and yes homosexual behavior acted out. These ar all sins equal in depravity in the eyes of God-no one is worse than the other. They are all mortal sins which separate the individual from his or her Creator.

However, it is recognized we are mere humans and are incline to fall prey to our passions at times. That is why God created the sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance.

God will forgive these sins if we truly repent and attempt to not place ourselves in situations which might lead us to mortal sin.
