Before embarking on any Electrical project know your limits, and only do what you feel comfortable with doing. If in the event that you do feel your doubtful contact an Electrician. Electrical repairs can be dangerous, yet some of them can be very simple i.e., changing a outlet, lighting, and switch plates.
There are some items you will need however for these repairs: The instructions that come with the item to be installed, a flat head and a cross-top screwdriver, electrical tape, and depending on what you are installing wire connectors. Now it is also important to know basic information about the wiring a black wire is know as the hot wire, the white is a neutral wire, and the green is know as the grounder.
The most important thing that you could possibly do is first read the instructions and see if this is something you feel confident about installing yourself. Then turn the power completely off to the socket or room you are making the repairs to. In older houses it is important to first look at the wiring to make sure it is in good condition and that the wires are colorized. If in an event they aren't use colored electrical tape to indicate the difference in the wires. As well as to make minor repairs to the wiring if needed.
Then follow the instructions to make sure that each step is being correctly executed! Once installation is done return power to source and test out the item installed. In event of problems call an electrician.
