Girlfriends airs on The CW network, which is a merger of UPN and the WB, with the programming from both channels now finding a new home. Originally from the often neglected UPN network does Girlfriends have what it takes to draw in a new audience?
Girlfriends is a show predominantly based on 4 African-American women and the issues they deal with in life. The main characters are Tony as played by Jill Marie Jones, Maya as played by Golden Brooks, Lynn as played by Persia White, and Joan a splayed by Tracee Ellis Rose; who is also considered the lead over the other three.
Another dramedy setting itself aside from the regular sitcom format, Girlfriends is like Soul Food for the Sex and the City audience. Comparison to the Sarah Jessica Parker project is often mad, but as an original series Girlfriends is not really going to ever be confused with other shows; if one watches regularly. However, in its time slot and the channel it is on confusion on when to tune in and why to tune in may prevail.
Girlfriends caters to an almost select audience: African-American females. It is good to have diversity in programming, but those not inside the target audience are not going to seek the show out and therefore in the end when weighing program options: is Girlfriends worth spending minutes of your life on? Short answer: No.
Likeable characters for the most part and laughs scattered throughout, Girlfriends will entertain those who chose to accept it over the newest reality program, but it is not worthy of the same type of buzz or excitement as generated with such other programs. Girlfriends began in 2000 and it seems that most of the shows actual fans are just now finding the program, but sometimes a revival just isn't worth the effort.
