Over The Counter Asthma Medications: Your Options

Allergic asthma treatment is more common today than it has ever been before as a direct result of environmental factors such as increased levels of pollution, a greater range of allergies and old-fashioned causes such as dust. A great number of people suffer from asthmatic reactions whilst displaying symptoms of an allergic reaction, but in some people this is so mild that they may not even notice it. However, those that do may go in search of over the counter asthma medications to ease their suffering!

Over the counter asthma medications were not widely available a few years ago. In fact, ten years ago allergic asthma treatments had to be prescribed because they were considered to potentially be part of an ongoing course of treatment that had to be recorded in an individual's medical notes. Having said that asthmatic reactions were not as common then as they are now, which is a sad reflection on our society and the health of the world. However, these are not the reasons why over the counter asthma medications are readily available now. That is down to advancing medical technology and a distinct change in society's attitudes.

Allergic asthma treatment has slowly but surely been updated to remain in keeping with modern society and now incorporates many natural ingredients that fight asthmatic reactions and provide effective relief for sufferers. These, of course, make up the majority of over the counter asthma medications because natural substances are not considered to be drugs and thus do not need prescriptions in order to control distribution. The fact that these medications do not incorporate drugs gives the individuals that suffer with asthma and allergic reactions the choice of allergic asthma treatment. They can either go to the doctors or try over the counter asthma medications first!

There are over the counter asthma medications available that have previously only been available on prescription, although they are limited in number. Bronchodilators are the most common allergic asthma treatment available from pharmacies without prescription. They actively relax the muscles in the airways, thus opening them and allowing air to flow naturally through. The prevent asthma attacks as a result. Although they do not need a prescription from your doctor, the pharmacist may just ask you a few questions before allowing you to purchase them. This is as a direct result of well-documented abuse of over the counter asthma medications. Individuals with asthma symptoms all year round carry out the majority of this abuse. They should not take over the counter asthma medications because it is not suitable for their respiratory problems.

Over the counter asthma medications should only be used by those with infrequent, or seasonal, and mild asthma attacks. They are not suitable for individuals with ongoing problems and can actually cause more harm than good in those circumstances. You should always be aware that self-diagnosis can be hit and miss, and thus should be absolutely certain of your symptoms and the causes before opting for allergic asthma treatment instead of a trip to the doctor's surgery!
