OutLaw Star is like watching a group of people caught in between Space Pirates, the Cops, and then some Gangsters. The show isn't exactly ground breaking, but it's in decent shape and entertaining enough when you just want some mindless middle of the ground action.
If you like space battles, magic, sci-fi action, and anime, this is the show for you. However, if you want to have to think about anything, or wonder about character development, this show is probably something you'll want to save for those times when you feel like being dumb. And even then, maybe you should go watch something else.
The show really deserves a grade of a B-. It's good, and entertaining enough, but it's a bit unoriginal and unimpressive. You've seen most of the elements in other animes, and done much better.
You don't see many people cosplaying any characters from this show because the character designs aren't very inspiring either.
Given the option, go watch something else.
