Of course there is always the option to use a table cloth, but then why worry about what it looks like to begin with. Be sure the table will work for your family and is not a hassle to take care of it you will be using it daily. And if you plan on spending a decent amount of money on your purchase be sure it will last the time you need if for. Punishment from children, teens, daily meals, and food prep; or perhaps the table will barely be used at all. Just be sure you can use the table in the way you wish before making that final purchase.

Lastly we come across affordability. Can you get what you want with the money you have? Well I can tell you if your not afraid to buy used you probably can. Especially if antique is the style you want. But shop around, always shop around. With so many retailers and online stores and such available it is easier than ever to get the price you want and can afford. So don't settle for the first price on the must have table you want. You may find something better and cheaper. You may regret passing up the opportunity later.

So I my self strongly suggest looking at these key points, size and type of space it will be in, style of look you want, functionality and durability, as well affordability, in the order I have suggested them. However if you insist on mixing them up a little make a list and do not skip one. With prices these days on all house items it is far more affordable to pick the right table for the room than make the room right for the table.
