Gastric bypass surgery. What a miracle? You can have surgery and it will help you lose the weight you have been trying so hard on your own to lose. This just sounds to good to be true. I am overweight by about 140 pounds and was seriously thinking about having this wonderful operation. Then I found out what I needed to know. My older sister had her gastric bypass surgery in January 2003. She had some complications and spent about a month and a half in the hospital. She had gotten infections in her spleen and her lungs. After going home from the hospital she got infection in her stomach and was taken back to the ER and admitted where her incision from her gastric bypass was opened up and left open. When she came home family members and nurses had to change her dressings and pack her open incision with gauze several times a day. She dropped from 325 pounds to 127 pounds in a matter of months. In the last 4 years since her surgery, she has had 2 bowel obstructions and part of her bowel removed, 2 hernias removed, she has become hypoglycemic, she is iron deficient and has a B12 deficiency. She can't eat without vomiting and she has been severely depressed from all of the illness and problems she has encountered. At one point she even told me she would rather be fat and happy than skinny and miserable. After researching I have found this to be the case of many people that have had gastric bypass and with what I know about it, I choose to stay away from it.
