7. Gadgets like pedometers or heart rate monitors are cool. Most runners I know have them and use them on occasion. Anyone who is new to running or has health concerns should definitely have a HR monitor. Make sure you select one that is easy to use, and comfortable to wear. If they aren't, it won't be used.

8. Watch. There are great sports watches available. Make sure you get one that is water (sweat) proof, easy to set for those who time laps in addition to overall run length. An illuminated dial or light option is a must for those late night or early AM runs in the dark days of winter.
9. Socks. The hi-tech fabrics are awesome, prevent blisters and look great. I can never have enough since most of them seem to be in the laundry at any given time.

This should help you get the creative juices flowing. As with any gift giving, keep the recipients personality in mind. If you know them well, you'll definitely know what running means to them. Is it just for exercise? A little disliked but necessary evil? Is is a joy and something they savor? For some people it's the time of day carved out just for them with no phones, kids or interruptions. Picking out something that adds to their pleasure of running or to their overall well-being will always be appreciated.
