How to buy furniture for small spaces

When you're furnishing a small space, size matters. But it's not the only thing. Here are some tips to keep in mind to help maximize every square inch.

Fit First

It may sound obvious, but always measure before you buy. Don't just measure the piece of furniture, or the space it's going in. Make sure it can fit through the door and around any tight corners as well. There's nothing worse than getting a double-door fridge or extra-deep sofa delivered, only to find it doesn't fit.

Fortunately there's a wide array of condo-sized furniture available. Even if you don't own a condo, these pieces are specially proportioned to fit in small spaces.

Of course, it is possible to buy regular, or even oversized furniture and make it work. But the latter is best left to the professionals.

Less Is More

If you like big furniture and know it will fit, be sure to pare back the number of pieces. The same goes for small pieces, too. Too much furniture can make a room feel cramped just as easily as too-big furnishings.

Above all, avoid clutter. Knick-knacks, tchotchkes, odds and ends: whatever you call them, they're anathema to a small space. If you have a collection, choose your favourite pieces and group them, then store the rest out of sight.

Light vs Dark

Dark colours recede, so to give the illusion of more space, try light or neutral-coloured furnishings. Save the colour for accent pieces like pillows, artwork, or an eye-catching rug.

Versatility

Furniture that does double duty is a great way to maximize space.

If you don't have the luxury of a separate dining room, look for a drop-leaf table or a coffee table you can also serve meals around. You can also use an oversized ottoman that functions as extra seating, a footrest or a table.

Sofa-beds are available everywhere from Ikea to high-end furniture stores, and they're perfect for overnight guests. They're a more attractive alternative to a standard futon. And some stores carry beds with storage underneath, which is great for bedrooms with limited closet space.

Personality

Just because you have a small space, doesn't mean there's no room for personality. Choose furnishings that reflect who you are, as well as your lifestyle. If you love entertaining for instance, tiny, uncomfortable chairs will only cramp your style. Better to buy a fabulous flokati rug and some colourful floor cushions.

On the other hand, perhaps you're a bookworm. If that's the case, look for interesting ways to display and store your volumes. Vertical bookcases, wall-mounted shelves, and stackable crates are all good options for the space-challenged.

Whatever your interests, devote part of your space to showing them off. It can be as simple as a souvenir from your travels displayed on a shelf, or a potted plant in your favourite colour beside your bed.

With a little planning, any room can feel airy and spacious. Just remember that the right furnishings can make a big difference.
