Fish Oil Promotes Weight Loss and Improves Cardiovascular Health
Fish oil supplements, combined with regular aerobic exercise have been shown to reduce body fat and improve cardiovascular and metabolic health in overweight patients. The combination of exercise and 6 grams of tuna fish oil supplements daily resulted in improved overall health better than either one used alone.
Seventy five overweight volunteers were entered into a research study. One group was given sunflower oil and the other group was given fish oil. Both groups walked for forty five minutes three times a week at a sufficient level to increase their heart rates to 75% of their age related target (Your maximum heart rate is about 220 minus your age). The study participants all had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, elevated triglyceride levels and were considered to be overweight.
The good news is that the fish oil group lost weight, showed improvement in HDL (the good) cholesterol levels and showed signs of having healthier blood vessels.
No one in the study was asked to change dietary habits and they all found the exercise requirements manageable, making this a reasonable option for us all.
This study result is published in the May 2007 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
