We should not blame the influences we choose to follow on TV programs

Blame TV

Lots of hard action. Sensual moments between lovers. These are a few catch phrases I regularly hear on TV. To the mind they are very attractive because deep down we all want to believe that somehow we could be that hero that annihilates all evil in the world. Or fall so deeply in love that we would lose our senses. So, if we are so drawn to TV, how is it that we can blame an inanimate object for how we live our lives, or how we raise our children?

How many times have we heard, "It's because all of that violence on TV." Well, let's break this apart shall we? First off, TV is meant to entertain, not to teach us or raise our children or how to live our lives. TV can be harmful, as can anything in this world, if you abuse it. When it comes to children, do they really have the power to not abuse something as delicious and addictive as the television? Some of the famous lines that go with this debate are, "Well, you should see what some of these stations put on TV." Fair enough. Yes, here in a free society where we have freedom of speech along with others, people are allowed to put almost anything on TV these days and the language and content keeps getting more risky as time goes on. As an adult we have free will and therefore are able to make a conscious choice between watching the violence and sex and not watching it. To make sure we can watch and watch for hours and hours, some people have asked that the networks start to put restraints on the language they use and some of the sexual and violent content. Most have, but not to an extent that is pleasing to some and yet they have to an extent that, I'm sure in the quiet corner of some people's closets, is displeasing. Let's face it, if you love TV you're going to watch it even if you don't always think what you're watching is appropriate even for you.
So with the exception that some boundaries can be put on the networks, what else could we do to make sure we don't watch too much TV to the point where we become addicted? Some people have suggested selling your TV. Just taking the temptation away would make a huge difference. But, then if something really important is going to be on the news how would you know? Some people say just listen to talk or news radio to find out. But, let's be honest, if you couldn't control yourself with your TV, how would anyone expect you to be able to control yourself with your radio? After all, radio puts just as much, if not more smut out there than TV. So now we face a big
