If you would like to know if you are overweight, there is the BMI indicator scale, which is available online. This calculator takes your height and weight to determine your body mass index. A BMI of over 25 is considered overweight. There are BMI scales that also add in your waist circumference for better accuracy.
A person under medical supervision should also consult with their doctor before going on any change or restriction in their diet, since a weight change could possibly effect a change in medication levels.
Since unnecessary additional weight can pose health risks, here are the health benefits to losing weight.
Decrease in blood pressure
Decrease in diabetes
Decrease in sleep apnea
Decrease in heart disease
Statistics show that heart disease is still the number one killer of both men and women, but the good news is, that if you are overweight, losing weight can lower your risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as lowering your blood pressure.
The percentages of those people with type 2 diabetes is on the increase due to an increase in overweight and obese people, but by even a relatively small percentage of weight loss, a person can reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes.
Maintaining a healthy weight can also reduce your risk of certain cancers, such as colon, bladder, prostrate, and some types of breast cancer. This is another important reason to lose extra pounds, if you find are overweight.
If you are suffering from the a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea, where you have several periods in the night when your sleep is interrupted, losing weight can also help this. Sleep apnea has been linked to overweight and obese people, since studies have shown improvement in a reduction of episodes of sleep apnea, when a person has lost weight.
A reduction in arthritis has also been linked to weight loss, since extra body weight pounds is harder on the bones. Arthritis suffers who have lost weight, have shown an improvement in their arthritis, which is a great incentive to losing those extra pounds.
With all the added health benefits to losing weight, if you find you have put on a few or even a significant amount of pounds, losing weight can get you back to feeling your best and to the healthy life you desire.
