the microphone. Most Karaoke events have corded or cordless microphones which have to be held all the time but some pubs now have microphones on stands so that the extra personality of the singer can express themselves by bodily movement and use of the hands; something which Whitney Houston for example excels at, both with the microphone in her hand and on a stand.
Don't push the microphone so close to your mouth that you end up kissing it. Microphones aren't the best hygienic devices around, more so when they are used at Karaoke events.
* Before the Podium *
Lastly before you even go up to the podium, feel good about yourself before you step up. If you go up looking like you are dreading every moment, the audience will retaliate into this and you may not get the appreciation you deserve. Breathe slowly and easily, relax and allow your lungs to open up simply by allowing your eyebrows and face to lift upwards. Getting up to sing with a stern look doesn't help anyone particularly as it can muffle the expression and clear, distinct quality the lyrics paint.
And after you have sung, thank the audience either by bowing or alerting that you know their appreciation. I've found that even with audiences who don't care the quickest reaction of a positive thank you surprises people and if you get to sing the same night, they may join in with you and may make new friends!
Karaoke is all about having a little fun. It is not a singing compeitition by any means unless it is branded so, and anyone who bases their experience on Karaoke alone or singing "a couple of times a year," with Karaoke will be severely misled to assume they can take their experience to later challenges such as X Factor or Pop Idol. Karaoke is a good step towards these TV series and improving your voice and confidence but it's not a means to an end.
