with the singer is better to listen to, and eventually sing along to.
In privacy, you can use a prop to emulate a microphone in your hand but I find that this is restrictive unless you are experienced at singing in Karaoke situations. The best way to practise is really to stand up straight, head level (not cast down or too high like you're about to scratch your chin!) hands by your side and start singing along with the music. This is the same kind of position you want to achieve when you get to the stage/podium area at the real event.
* Do's and Don'ts at Karaoke Events *
Drinking chilled carbonated soda is fine in my book for singing. At every event and compeitition I've sung at, I've often taken either flavoured spring water with me or had a quick glug of 7up! It is important to keep vocal chords wet and carbonated soda is perfect for this; get rid of gas obviously before you reach the podium as you don't want to find yourself burping down the microphone; this will put anyone off instantly if they are listening to you.
Don't drink diary products or sweet based liquor cream Sherries. Having a Baileys to steady your nerves will make you worse as it contains milk and cream. Milk and cream are perfect for coating the back of your throat and the notes in your voice may not fully emerge.
Don't go to Karaoke with a full stomach or attempt it when you're drunk on several beers or lagers. The amount of people I've seen falling off stage taking the microphone with them being under the influence is quite high against people losing their balance trying to re-enact Madonna dancing to Vogue and sing at the same time!
Smoking isn't a particular nice habit to have, but I've witnessed wonderful singers who have managed to come across with a dark husky voice similar to Janis Joplin and who had a smoke before they reached the microphone!
* The Microphone *
The microphone however is a prop in practise which in reality is a microphone which will project the volume of your voice, so it is best never to think that you need to shout or scream down a microphone unless the song has this element built into it. One of the ways in which you can easily obtain how a microphone is used is simply to view videos (if available) of the original songs you have chosen to sing. Watch the performer through the verses and not the choruses because most choruses become too dramatic to try and achieve the same results. Watch how they sing at the microphone rather than attempting to look at how they sing WITH
