Your favorite Harry Potter character

by Ethel Smith

Created on: July 26, 2007

I love so many of the characters of the Harry Potter book's, and films, that it is very hard singling one out for the winner's crown, as my favourite. Some of the best charcters for me are:-

Hagrid the wild, gentle giant. Robbie Coltrane plays him to perfection in the film's of the books.
Ron Weasley, with his comical mistakes and typically boyish charm.
Dudders, the nasty fat cousin of Harry, who treats Harry so badly. This is a love to hate character. He is larger than life in every sense.

Professor Trelawny with her limited magical powers and airy fairy teaching methods.

I could go on for ever but that's not the point of the article is it?. So, Ta-Da, my number one is Luna Lovegood. I imagine this character to dress in an almost sixties hippy style of dress. She is sort of laid back and seems at times dimwitted. However underneath that exterior lies a heart of gold, which will always remain faithful to her friends. She is the sort of person who I would want on my side, as her loyalty will know no bounds. She would willingly put herself into danger for her friends.

Both her, and her family, are eccentric and her Dad runs a newspaper press which is seen initially as nothing more than made up drivel. However things ultimately change. The description of Luna commentating at the Quidditch match with all her peculiar idiosyncrasies and strange clothes is so easy to imagine. Luna often brings a touch of light relief to these ever darkening tales.

Luna or Loony Lovegood as some choose to call her epitomizes that character in every school who is a little odd, but lovable, and who makes a great lifetime friend. As a character in the Harry Potter books she does not arrive in the saga at the beginning. Initially her role is fairly small. However, through all seven books her role eventually comes to the fore and gains the significance it deserves.

Since I originally wrote this article Luna has come to life on our screens in the film of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The young actress does a great job of trying to portray Luna's slightly off-beat character and persona.
