The evolution of World Wrestling Entertainment is something that has been the center of attention for many years. From the glory days of classic wrestling it headed into a world of super-human strength and captivating gimmicks and storylines. Following that, it entered a world of attitude, violence and women to garnish more media attention and following that, we are in the modern day of 2009.
To say exactly where the WWE is heading is impossible as things are always changing. The companies product has moved away from violence and uncensored action in attempts to garnish attention from a younger audience. They have lowered their rating to make it suitable for children of all ages, and with the growing popularity of child-favorite professional wrestlers in their company from the likes of John Cena and Dave Batista to the masked enigma known as Rey Mysterio and the straight-edge, no drugs, no alcohol CM Punk, it seems that the fading popularity of the WWE may have came up with a way to make it back to the top of the entertainment world.
Change is something that has to occur in order to progress. Progression in professional wrestling was something that drastically lacked in the 1990's when the Monday Night War's were ruling the sport. This was due to the biggest stars equaling the biggest ratings, the more they were on television and the more they were involved with the storylines, the more ratings they would get, yet at the same time, leaving less television time to build up the younger generation of stars. This at the time did not seem an issue, as the likes of Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Sting and Bret Hart were still relatively young and healthy. However, ten years down the line, WWE began to feel the effects of not building up their younger stars the way that WCW felt it years before.
With very few mainstream talents on their roster, the change began to take place and the popularity began to dwindle. This is when WWE started to build up their younger stars into mainstream talents and the likes of John Cena and Batista were bought to the light. Nowadays on WWE Raw, Smackdown and ECW, if you have not seen wrestling for a few years, you will barely recognize any faces as the majority of the stars are modern day talents, new talents that the WWE has attempted to build up to create a new era and head in a new direction. This plan however is just the roots, the starting ground for future plans and future stars, the way that your Hulk Hogan's and your Sting's were built 25 years ago.
As of right now, WWE is recovering from a downward spiral after phasing out their big stars and building up their new stars. With the growing popularity of these new stars, especially among the younger generation, it is safe to say that WWE is heading in the right direction in 2009. With the growing company of Total nonstop Action quickly catching up in the ratings, it may not be long before we see a new Monday Night War between the two companies and that is where it will get interesting. We could very well be in the calm before the storm, and only time will tell us if the premonition will come to pass!
