Reflections: The complications of growing up

by Madison

Today's world is complex and hard to fathom at times. I'm a grown up and even I cannot comprehend the world on certain days. Today I heard on the news that during the home invasion crime in CT that all three women were repeatedly sexually assaulted. I recoiled in horror at that, as one of the victims was only 11 years of age. I hardly consider an 11 year old a woman, but in this cruel attack the hardened criminals savagely attacked and murdered 2 sisters and their mother.

Growing up in today's world must be hard. Children from the town of the murders must try to fathom how and why their friends were killed. They must try to understand what rape means. They must try to understand that their town will now be a much more strict place to live. They will probably lose many of their freedoms as their parents will want to keep a close eye on them.

IF one has the luxury of growing up, for murder rates are climbing, what is it like to grow up in a world where parents must turn off the evening news for the crimes reported on are so horrific? I know I will not sleep well tonight. I know the feeling of horror I had when reading that the criminals tied the girls in their beds, raped them, poured gasoline around the beds, and ignited it, killing the girls will keep me awake fretting about the evil that walks our planet.

How does one grow up in a world where unspeakable evils occur in such random ways?
We have a complicated world today. We are blessed with advances in science, technology, and travel and yet barbaric events still occur. We are still plagued with events so evil they warrant biblical "eye for an eye" punishment strategy.

So spend time with the kids you know. Talk to them. Reassure them and make them feel safe in the world. Help them through the stormy times of growing up; it must be much harder now than it was "back in the day."
