How to make a living as a freelance journalist

by Stacy

You have a passion for words. You know what you want to say and you want to be heard. What better way than to be a freelance journalist. Having your articles accepted is not as easy as one may think. There is an abundance of competition. You must first decide how to make your article stand out. There is a high demand now for non-fiction articles. You may think non-fiction is too hard or too boring. You may think that you will not be able to express yourself and show your creativity as well with this genre. Not so my friend. Once you decide on a subject of interest, you must research and find interesting facts. Usually, if it appeals to you, it will also appeal to your reader. You do not want your article to read like a school book. Add some humor and anecdotes unique to your style. Make it stand out. Let the editor know "Hey, I'm different and this subject is important and interesting."

You may earn only a couple hundred dollars per article but, with much effort, you can get the creative juices flowing. Read the magazines you are interested in selling to to see what they are looking for and go from there. Some want a query letter and resume. Others are looking for the complete manuscript. You just have to get it out there.
You can make a living as a freelance journalist. You just have to believe in yourself and your talent.
