No matter what we do for a living, we all have essentially the same job. That job is to make our bosses' lives easier. "Kissing up" is an unattractive phrase, but it is true that the more you can do for your boss, the better you will do in your career.
The secret is to actually take action. No boss is going to be impressed by an employee who simply follows him around all day to agree with everything that they say. But some activities that could be interpreted as "kissing up" by coworkers can really add value for the employer. Offering to do tasks that aren't part of the job description shows teamwork, doing something before being asked shows initiative. Even offering to get the boss a coffee when you are on your way to get your own shows good time management and thoughtfulness to boot.
In any workplace it is in an employee's best interest to set himself apart by making the boss's job go more smoothly. Employees who aren't afraid to appear to be kissing up will soon be the ones that others are kissing up to.
