It may seem slightly ironic, that despite the love from fans of Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka, Roald Dahl wasn't happy about the movie. Perhaps it was that Dahl didn't want to book made into a movie, or he didn't want it as a musical, or maybe he wasn't happy with Wilder's portrayal. However his is the one which sticks in the mind when the book/movie name is mentioned.

Whilst's Depps portrayal was interesting, it holds nothing to Wilders more eccentric character. Yes Depp's was eccentric, but he also held a childlike quality which Wilders thankfully lacked. Wilder portrays the infamous chocolate factory owner with an aplomb. He guides us easily through his factory of wonders, dispatching of each bad mannered, spoilt child with a ease and throws in a few songs along the way.

He shows his darker side, not only on the infamous psychedelic boat ride (which still seems a little creepy) but as each child meets their fate and he merely calls on the Oompa Lumpas to move them on their way, (setting weird unimaginable outcomes to their predicaments in the process), but he has his fun interesting moments, where nothing fazes him of his topsy turvy world in which he lives.

All in all Gene Wilder brought a fabulous literary character to life, (despite misgivings from its creator in being brought to the big screen) and introduced Dahls weird and wonderful Wonka World to millions.
