Treatments for bruxism are dependent on its causes. Determining the causes for bruxism is the trickier part and is the first stage of the treatment process that must not be skipped. Hence other than just treating the 'symptoms' like worn down teeth, it will do victims well to look into the causes and seek expert help that will hopefully reduce the damage to the teeth. In fact, dealing with the actual causes for bruxism may actually help you discover and get rid of more serious problems.
If we consider bruxism as a symptom for more serious causes, we will probably be more accurate in diagnosing its causes and ensuring a greater success in treating it. A general approach to the treatment would be:
* a check up with the general practitioner who may recommend the suspect case to a dentist to have a check if the cause is related to tooth issues. Tooth issues are quite easy to deal with, after which the patient and his sleeping partners may have peaceful slumber.
* a referral to a psychologist to determine psychological causes such as stress, a recent traumatic incident or childhood events that have been tucked away in the recesses of the mind and heart.
These are a few possible causes of bruxism and the possible treatments.
Delayed response to stress: Bruxism may be a result of high tension during the day due to work stress or frequent unexpected stressful happenings and conditions. Hypnosis or a journal, and a good sleep mate may help monitor when you 'brux' more, and why. After you change your work environment, quit your job to have more time for yourself and do the job that you really love, you may rid yourself of bruxism as well.
Crooked teeth or malocclusion: Get the dentist to see how your teeth may be straightened. Wearing braces may not provide a long term solution because you will still need to wear brackets at night to keep the teeth in place after your braces are removed. At the least, you gain a nicer smile and your bed or room-sharer, sweeter dreams. That would make you a happier and less stressed person in the day, one that feels more beautiful and hence more relaxed in your sleep at night!
Consumption of certain drugs and alcoholic drinks: Quit before you lose more than a sleeping partner - your life. If your illness is not long term, you may want to seek a second specialist's opinion on the medication you may be consuming, especially if you have someone who can vouch that the medication or alcoholic consumption is the cause of bruxism.
Inherited condition of people who are aggressive, impulsive or perfectionist: This may be harder to deal with, as it involves a person's character. Counseling is a necessity. Learn to relax and manage stress. Learn to say 'no' to people or circumstances that put you in an unacceptable stress level.
Remember that bruxism may cause you to lose more than your sleep. That should be reason enough for you to seek diagnosis and treatment before your life or happiness is threatened. Helping my son opened venues to help myself, a victim of bruxism. When our daytime stress was thrown out of our lives, so were our bad breath, disrupted sleep due to our persistent teeth grinding and unhappiness during the day because we now have enough beauty sleep!
