Reflections: Changing role of parenting

The world is always changing. Sometimes for the better but you can be sure that there are a lot of things out there that you would rather not experience. With womens right to work comes more mothers leaving their children at home to earn a paycheck. With paternity leave and mens rights on the rise, men are able to leave work for longer and longer periods of time during their child's first year.

There are more single dads, more same sex couples and more grandparents raising children.
Whoever said that a child needs a biological mother and father is out in left field somewhere.

The role of the parent is a constant. To provide food, shelter, guidance and safety for their child. The parent could be an aunt, an adoptive dad, a grandmother or even a friend of the biological parent. There may be two moms and one dad, two dads and a grandmother, a mom and her best friend...The circumstances to which the caregiver arrived at the point where there is a child in their care is of no consequence. That they provide for the child's needs is the only matter of importance.

The challenges in parenting change every day. Where we were afraid of children listening to Jazz and reading comic books in the past, we have oversexed pop music and violence on television today.
There is terrorism and war, but there were wars in the past, poverty and strife. The human spirit has persisted. We weather these challenges. Each one handed to us as parents. We cannot hide our children from reality but we can be there to provide them with the best answers and guidance possible. This is the ever constant role of the parent.
The world changes, we still love and care for our children. Our methods, family structures, situations and challenges may change, the bottom line stays the same.

The role of a parent is to love their child. This will never change.
